Disaster Assistance

The Alliance for Response Ohio (AR-OH) is a collaborative organization that presents educational programs on disaster preparedness, response, and recovery for Ohio’s cultural heritage organizations (museums, archives, libraries, halls of fame, colleges and universities, historic homes, houses of worship, and performing arts organizations). Seated within ICA, AR-OH works closely with Cuyahoga County Office of Emergency Management to ensure the needs of cultural heritage organizations during emergencies are reflected in the County's planning documents, specifically the Emergency Operation Plan. AR-OH was awarded a grant from the Foundation for the Advancement in Conservation to develop a replicable, scalable model for creating county-specific Cultural Heritage Advisory Committees, which will be completed and shared in Summer 2026. AR-OH presents two free programs a year on topics related to disaster recovery and emergency response. If you would like to learn more about AR-OH, contact ConnectwithICA@ica-artconservation.org.

Photography & Documentation –

Capturing the Journey, Frame by Frame.

ICA staff document the condition of objects before, during, and after conservation treatment and adhere to the highest museum standards for documentation. Our talented photographer can create images suitable for reproduction, if desired. Conservators are also able to perform technical examinations of artwork using infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) light.

Surveys & Assessments –

Understanding and Protecting Your Collection.

Collection surveys and institutional assessments evaluate the preservation environment of your organization. Item-level surveys detail individual objects' needs and help prioritize care, while institutional assessments offer a snapshot of your organization's preservation priorities. These reports are crucial for curatorial decision-making, developing preservation strategies, and fulfilling the requirements for federal and state conservation funding.

Object-by-object condition surveys describe the condition and preservation/ conservation needs for individual objects and help establish priorities for collections care. They include time and cost estimates for treatment, rehousing, and appropriate storage. Survey reports are valuable tools for curatorial decision making, establishing a preservation strategy, and determining priority care. Importantly, many federal and state granting agencies require assessments and collection-based surveys before funds will be allocated for the conservation of individual works in a collection.

ICA conservators can also make annual or seasonal visits to your institution to monitor changes in preservation conditions and make recommendations for improvement as necessary.
